BTTF PosterBack to the Future (BTTF) released in 1985 by Universal Studios and Amblin Entertainment remains one of the most popular time travel movies ever made.  Directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, BTTF remains in the top 40 highest grossing movies of all times.

The story revolves around reluctant time traveler, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), who accidentally travels back in time from 1985 to 1955 in a time machine invented by his eccentric friend, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd).  Marty bumps into his parents (as teenagers) and spends the remainder of his time trying to preserve his future and existence.

Props from the first movie are the hardest to find.

Fun Facts

  • Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as Marty McFly, can still be seen in several scenes.  When the Lybians shoot at Marty and he dives into the car, the person actually diving into the DeLorean is Eric Stoltz.  You can also catch a glimpse of him when Biff hits Marty during their encounter in Lou's Diner.
  • Farmer Peabody's son is named Sherman. Sherman was the name of the little boy time traveler in one segment of Jay Ward's cartoon show, "Bullwinkle Show, The" (1961).  The dog who owned his time machine was named Mr. Peabody.
  • The date Marty travels back in time to, November 5, is the same date of time travel in Time After Time (1979) and Timerider:  The Adventures of Lyle Swann.
  • The episode of The Honeymooners (1955) that they watch during dinner at Lorraine's house actually aired on December 31, 1955 and not November 5, 1955.
  • The diner in 1955 is Lou's Diner...in 1985, the same building is Lou's Aerobic Center.
  • When Marty returns to the future he is glad to see the town hobo and calls him Red. In 1955 mayor Red Thomas was running for re-election.
  • The mall where Marty McFly meets Doc Brown for their time travel experiment is called "Twin Pines Mall". Doc Brown comments that old farmer Peabody used to own all of the land, and he grew pines there. When Marty goes back in time, he runs over and knocks down a pine tree on the Peabody's property. When he comes back to the mall at the end of the film, the sign at the mall identifies the mall as "Lone Pine Mall."
  • Director Robert Zemeckis used the same beginning as The Time Machine (1960) as a homage to that film.
  • Character name of Emmett comes from the word "time," spelled backwards and pronounced as syllables (em-it).
  • Although many thought the 1985 hair dryer hanging from Marty's belt as he tried to scare George dressed as Darth Vader was a continuity error.  In fact, there is a deleted scene which shows Doc Brown looking in a suit case he had packed and placed in the Delorean in 1985.  It contained the modern hair dryer.
